APC Blasts Alex Otti Over Naming Of Umuahia Bus Terminal After Prof. Nnenna Otti

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned Governor Alex Otti’s decision to name the newly commissioned Umuahia Central Bus Terminal after Professor Nnenna Otti, describing the move as controversial and capable of eroding public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the APC argued that honouring Professor Nnenna Otti, who served as the Returning Officer during the 2023 Abia governorship election, raises ethical concerns and suggests possible conflict of interest.
The opposition party maintained that Professor Otti merely performed her constitutional responsibility on behalf of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for which she was officially appointed and compensated, questioning the basis for what it described as “special recognition” from the beneficiary of the election outcome.
According to the APC, no governor in the country has named public infrastructure after electoral officials who supervised elections in their states, insisting that the development could create dangerous precedents and further fuel public suspicion about the neutrality of election officers.
The party also alleged that the repeated celebration of Professor Nnenna Otti’s role in the 2023 governorship election has strengthened perceptions of a close relationship between her and Governor Alex Otti, warning that such actions may weaken confidence in future elections.
The APC further argued that conferring public honours on electoral officials shortly after elections could be interpreted as inducement or gratification in a democratic setting, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement urged Professor Nnenna Otti to reject the honour if she considers herself a principled public servant, adding that accepting it would reinforce doubts surrounding the credibility of the 2023 governorship election in Abia State.
The party also threatened to petition the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the relationship between Governor Alex Otti and Professor Nnenna Otti, including her conduct during the election collation process.
In addition, the APC referenced allegations of financial mismanagement and abuse of office linked to Professor Nnenna Otti’s tenure at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), arguing that such allegations contradict efforts to portray her as a symbol of integrity.
The opposition party stated that Abia State has several distinguished personalities whose long-standing contributions to the development of the state make them more deserving of such recognition. Among those mentioned were Sir J.O.J. Okezie, Chief Sam Okwulehie, Sam Mbakwe, Dr. Anagha Ezikpe, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Elder Emma Adaelu.
The APC concluded that immortalizing an electoral official instead of respected statesmen and development contributors amounts to “an insult to Abians and a mockery of democratic values,” and called on Governor Alex Otti to reverse the decision
